Statutory powers have been sought for residents’ associations for issuing birth, death, and residence certificates and to effectively intervene in various issues faced by the citizens.

The two-day executive committee of the National Confederation of Residents Association that concluded here on Sunday said Parliament should enact a legislation to give statutory powers to residents’ associations.

The national executive, chaired by president, Rao Chelikani, said statutory powers would give legal authority to associations across the country and enable them to issue certificates. Representatives of 11 States participated in the meeting.

A national-level advisory council was mooted by the executive panel to take up issues at the national level, confederation vice president M.S. Venugopal said.

The association also sought steps to lift barriers such as double taxation for better inter-State relations.

Awards

At the meeting, the national life-time achievement awards were presented to Mayor K. Chandrika and founder-president of the Federation of Residents Association Trivandrum (FRAT), M.V. Sugathan.
