Kerala registered 57 per cent excess rainfall during the period from October 1 to 14, even as the southwest monsoon withdrew from the entire country on Monday.
The India Meteorology Department has announced the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from East and Northeast India, peninsular India, Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
Subdued rainfall
However, subdued rainfall activity is likely to continue over south peninsular India, according to the weather outlook for the next two days.
Kerala had a seasonal rainfall deficit of 26 per cent during the period from June 1 to September 30. The excess rain in early October spells good for the State that had begun preparations to tackle the situation in the event of weak rains in the second cycle from October to December.
The State received 210.9 mm of rain in the first two weeks of October against a normal rainfall of 134 mm. Kannur district recorded the maximum excess of 158 per cent during the period, while Kozhikode received excess rainfall of 151 per cent.
Palakkad and Idukki registered normal rainfall, while all other districts recorded excess. Lakshadweep also received excess rainfall of 67 pr cent during the period.
Meanwhile, IMD has forecast above normal rainfall (>111% of the long period average of 332.1 mm) during the northeast monsoon season for the south peninsula covering Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Kerala and south interior Karnataka. The peninsular region receives about 30 per cent of its annual rainfall during the northeast monsoon season from October to December. Tamil Nadu receives about 48 per cent of its annual rainfall during the season.
