Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan has hailed the Central government’s decision to continue the interest subvention and subsidy for short-term agricultural loans.

In a letter to Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Tuesday, he said the government’s commitment in the Lok Sabha to earmark Rs.13,000 crore in the budget for the subsidy and interest subvention scheme would be a blessing for farmers in Kerala. “Without this assistance, the farmers affected by natural calamities will find it difficult to take up re-cultivation. This will impact their livelihood and the food security of the State itself.” Mr. Mohanan also welcomed the declaration including coastal erosion, thunder, and lightning in the calamities eligible for compensation for crop loss.

Crop insurance

The proposal to introduce a special crop insurance for farmers is also appreciable, he said, adding these novel decisions would trigger a boom in the agricultural sector in India.
