: A set of ‘reading cards’ brought out by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for students of classes 1 and 2 will be released during the Reading Week celebrations at Karthika Thirunal Vocational and Higher Secondary School for Girls, Manacaud, on Wednesday.
The cards, brought out under the Learning Enhancement Programme (LEP) of the SSA, are aimed as supplementary reading material.
Each set of reading cards is meant for use in the classroom by a group of five children. The themes of the cards correspond with the content of the textbooks.
“Learning outcomes in the curriculum specify the language skills needed by students passing out of class 1 and 2. But often, the children fail to achieve them. The reading cards are expected to make up this gap,” says SSA District Project Officer M. Rajesh.
The function will also see the release of five books brought out by the SSA, one of which is a collection of writings of 100 students from classes 3 to 7 as part of the Vayanavasantham programme held by the SSA from October to March last year.
The SSA plans to take forward the Vayanavasantham initiative this year too. ‘Alamariyil Ninnu Arivotsavam,’ a programme first launched by the SSA in 2012-13, is also being revived this year with certain changes. Aimed at strengthening school libraries, it involves giving them a facelift, so that children feel like visiting them.
