A special security plan will be in place during the Onam Ramzan festival season, City Police Commissioner T.J. Jos has said.
Talking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a Janamaithri Suraksha meeting at the Armed Reserve Camp, Nandavanam, here on Saturday he said additional security measures including ‘on-call bike patrolling’ and installation of 200 surveillance cameras at select festival venues were being planned. As many as 1,600 personnel would be on duty during the festival period.
“Six select venues will be covered by ‘on-call bike patrols.’ A separate control room will function during the festival,” Mr. Jose said.
Addressing the meeting, he said the members of the community policing project would play an active role in the hassle-free conduct of various events by teaming up with the police. The association members raised issues associated with traffic control, vehicle parking, and patrolling at the meeting.
“The Shanghumugham beach area is a main venue for the Onam celebrations where thousands of people will gather, especially during the ‘Kadalolam’ fest beginning on August 24. We have requested the city police to install surveillance cameras and lights in these areas to ensure the safety of visitors,” said Roy, Shanghumugham Residents’ Association member.
The members had been asked to circulate the list of emergency numbers and alert the police in case of any emergency. The residents’ associations had also been asked to collect the details of elderly people living in their respective areas. Private security guards on duty would be mandated to provide their details to the residents’ association office-bearers.
“People have been asked to ensure adequate security to their property going on vacation. The residents’ association members can alert the police if the area needed additional patrolling,” Mr. Jose said.
