A photo exhibition on the fishing community of the country and the different stages in the development of the National Fisherman Forum (NFF) was held in the city on Tuesday in connection with the forum's national meet.
Photographs of children carrying fishing gear, vendors at the beach, and protest marches of many coastal movements — some in black and white, some in colour — portrayed the life and struggle of the fishing community in the country over a decade.
The exhibition also told the success story of NFF, the national federation of trade unions and organisations of fish workers in India.
The forum was established in 1978 following a series of movements by fish workers from all over India. The photos trace the journey of the ‘Save the Coast, Save the Fishers' movement of 1989, for strengthening the community to fight the forces that threatened their existence. The march was a call to safeguard India's coastlines, which in turn would protect the fishing community whose lives organised around it.
Pageantry
Seminars and screening of documentary films are being held at Hassan Marikar Hall in the city. A rally and pageantry are also being organised as part of the meet, which concludes on December 9.
