Cultural Affairs Minister K.C. Joseph has called for added efforts to promote serious theatre.

He was addressing the inaugural function of the Sixth International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK 2014) here on Monday.

“Theatre is going through a bad patch. The popularity of other visual media has affected drama. Theatre practitioners are finding the going tough,” he said.

Soorya Krishnamurthy, festival director and Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi chairman, presided.

District Panchayat President C.C. Sreekumar; Mayor Rajan Pallan; Anuradha Kapur, former director of the National School of Drama; Anna Tryc-Bronley, Director, Polish Institute, New Delhi; and Deepan Sivaraman, artistic director of the festival, spoke.

The plays, The Kitchen (India) and Burning Flowers’ ‘Seven Dreams of a Woman’ (Indo-Polish), were staged after the meeting.
