Sit-in against quarrying today

March 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Mookkunnimala Samrakshana Samithi will organise a march and a sit-in at the Mining and Geology Department’s office at Kesavadasapuram here on Monday.

A statement from the Samithi said quarry owners were violating rules of mining in the area, allegedly with support from officials of the department, and mining over 130 feet into the earth.

Court order

This severely damaged the the environment, they alleged.

The recent court orders prohibiting quarrying in the area had done little to deter the mafia here, Samithi members alleged.

District panchayat president Rufus Daniel would inaugurate the protest and the sit-in at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Mass participation

The public of Mookkunnimala, environmentalists and other supporters of the agitation against quarrying in the region would participate, the statement said.
