The State Human Rights Commission has ordered a probe into the alleged anomalies in the treatment given to a child who was bitten by a dog.
SHRC chairman J.B. Koshy has sought a probe against the Child Welfare Committee which had reportedly promised free treatment to the child from the Vellore Christian Medical College.
The complainant, S. Sheena of Kamukarakonam, had stated that her son Darush was bitten on the nose by a pet dog from the neighbourhood on December 31, 2012, and that the three-year-old boy was rushed to the General Hospital. The duty doctor gave injections on either sides of the nose, and the child, on returning home, got severe fever. On returning to the GH, they were redirected to the SAT Hospital, where it was said that the injections had affected the brain.
Government did not foot the bill
The child was shifted to the Vellore hospital, with the Child Welfare Committee making arrangements for the government to bear the expenses. The complainant says the expenses were not borne by the government and the family was left without money even to return home after the treatment.
The commission will take up the case for hearing again on June 27, after getting all reports by June 7.
