SHRC flays doctors

February 04, 2014 01:21 pm | Updated May 18, 2016 05:52 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The State Human Rights Commission has termed the recent strike declaration by the Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA), following the suspension of a doctor at Neyyattinkara General Hospital, “a violation of human rights”.

The action against doctors had been taken following the report submitted by a five-member committee of doctors and hence it was unfair of the doctors to strike work. It is unreasonable of the doctors to suggest that no action should be taken against them, the SHRC chairperson, J. B. Koshy, said while hearing a petition filed by one Ananthapuri Manikantan.

Mr. Koshy has also asked the Director of Health Services to inform the commission if the government has taken any steps to cancel the recognition of KGMOA, “which seems to be pushing doctors towards a strike at every instance”. The government should inform the commission if any action has been taken against the office-bearers of KGMOA, SHRC has said. The case will be heard again on March 28.
