May 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:36 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) has decided to launch a campaign demanding relinquishment of the Vizhinjam Container Transhipment Terminal Project and a study on the geographical changes it could cause to the coastal areas.

The annual KSSP conference, which concluded in Kollam on Sunday, decided to launch a campaign for education, health, environment, and gender justice. The conference also decided to organise a workshop on providing free and universal healthcare facilities in the public sector and submit its recommendations to the government.

A campaign will also be taken up to highlight the Right to Education Act, continuous evaluation in educational institutions including autonomous and self-financing colleges. Gender justice and democracy within families is the parishad’s campaign issue for the year.

Superstitions

The KSSP also decided to intensify its campaign seeking a law to end exploitation in the name of superstitions. It was also decided to prepare a humanist manifesto and organise a cultural ‘yatra’.

A resolution adopted by the conference said the system of providing MLA and MP funds should be done away with, and that they should be given to the State and local self-governments.

Effective implementation of e-governance and restructuring the administrative system at the Secretariat were also discussed.

The conference demanded legislation to protect hills on the lines of Paddy Field and Wetland Conservation Act. Public places and institutions should be made more women-friendly, while women component schemes in local governments should be revamped, the parishad said.

The conference also passed a constitution amendment reserving 25 per cent of posts in all executive committees of the organisation for women. Dr. K.P. Aravindan presided.
