District Collector K.N. Satheesh has assured that work associated with the extension of sewerage network in coastal wards will be speeded up during a meeting held at the Secretariat here on Friday.
The meeting, involving officials of the city Corporation Councillors, Kerala Water Authority, the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project, and Principal Secretary of the Local Self Government James Varghese, was convened to address the demands of councillors on the commissioning of the Muttathara sewerage treatment plant.
The plant began functioning on a trial basis over a week ago. Since KSUDP officials failed to attend the meeting arranged at the Corporation on Tuesday to address certain deficiencies, Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors gheraoed the KSUDP office on Wednesday, protesting against the delay in the extension of the network.
The meeting on Friday saw the fixing of a timeline for the pending work indicated by councillors of the coastal wards that lay near the treatment plant.
It was also decided that in 15 days, the tender process would be completed for the construction of a compound wall.
Another point raised by councillors pertained to the management of residual sludge. KSUDP officials said they had a drier unit in place, but there was no clarity regarding where and in what manner the dried sludge would be transported to.
In two weeks
A temporary arrangement would be figured out in two weeks and the plant would be commissioned only after that, said Works Standing Committee Chairman V.S. Padmakumar.
In addition, the Corporation also decided to forward a request to the State government to grant 25 acres of land adjacent to the existing plant.
