IISER’s mobile unit will visit schools, conduct scientific experiments

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram has launched IISER@School programme to enrich scientific temper of students and encourage them to take up scientific research.

IISER Director V. Ramakrishnan flagged off the programme on Tuesday and the first programme was conducted at Government Higher Secondary School, Vithura. Under the programme, a mobile unit consisting of students, faculty, and staff, with a mini lab, would visit government and aided schools in the State and conduct a symposium on ‘Discovering Science’ at each venue. Dean (R&D), IISER-TVM, M.P. Rajan addressed the high school students at Vithura. An interactive session followed, where various experiments were demonstrated. The students got an opportunity to see radiometer demonstration, analysis of isotopes of hydrogen in water, cryogenics, Meissner effect, DNA extraction, and Foldscope, a paper microscope. The session concluded with puzzles and brain games. School Principal Anitha P.R. and teachers were present to help the IISER team.

According to IISER, the programme is aimed at introducing high school students to the world of science through experiments and demonstrations that will instil appreciation of science in young minds.

32 schools

IISER outreach committee and Anvesha team, the science club of the institute, are the organisers of this programme. In the current academic year, the programme will cover 32 schools in the State. In the next five years, it will cover at least 100 schools. Schools wishing to invite IISER team to visit their school can write to Dean (Research and Development), IISER Thiruvananthapuram or request through mail deanrdc@iisertvm.ac.in, a release said.
