Schools in the district reverberated with the sounds of song, dance, and play on Wednesday, the first day of the new academic year.

Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom, played host to the State-level Praveshanotsavam.

At Government Central High School, Attakulangara, the Praveshanotsavam was inaugurated by Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader V.S. Achuthanandan.

A day to rejoice

Mr. Achuthanandan said the day was one to rejoice as the school that was on the verge of closure had bounced back, courtesy a long struggle waged to protect the over-a-century-old institution that was part of the State’s heritage and tradition.

It was a victory for the people, the school protection committee, its alumni, the teacher-parent committee, and Tree Walk members. Stalwarts such as Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer, Pattom Thanu Pillai and Sahodaran Ayyappan had been closely associated with the school, he said. The protection of the school was everyone’s responsibility, Mr. Achuthanandan said.

At Government Lower Primary School, Cotton Hill, State Police Chief Loknath Behera who was on his way to assume charge dropped in to welcome students.

He presented them with books and sweets and spent time with them, making the occasion a memorable one.
