The Social Justice Department will implement various schemes for marginalised sections of people in society, Minister for Social Justice K.K. Shylaja has said.

She was speaking after inaugurating a one-day seminar organised by the Kerala State Handicapped Persons Welfare Corporation and the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation at the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum here on Thursday.

Ms. Shylaja said Sadhairyam Munnottu, an awareness programme for women empowerment, will be launched this month. Under the project, homes and shelters for women will be modernised. Sayamprabha, a scheme for the elderly, will get under way soon.

The government was committed to the welfare of the transgender community, she said. It would work to address the problems faced by transgenders and for their acceptance in society.

The government, the Minister said, had collected details of the differently abled in society. The list of eight lakh people would be categorised on panchayat basis so that schemes could be formulated by them taking into account the help required by each differently abled person.

She said the State government had contributed ₹3.7 crore as its share in the Swavalamban medical insurance scheme for the 1 lakh physically challenged people in the State.

Skill training programmes should be drawn up for the physically challenged with the support of the Kerala State Handicapped Persons Welfare Corporation, she said. The corporation would start offices in all districts in phases, she added.

Kerala State Handicapped Persons Welfare Corporation chairman Parasuvakkal Mohanan presided over the function.
