Corporation to spend Rs.900 a month on each beneficiary

The City Corporation has launched a scheme to reach out to the needy and the destitute with food grains, housing and medical assistance.

The local body has identified 1,127 beneficiaries for the scheme titled Ashraya that will be implemented under the People's Plan Campaign.

As many as 167 beneficiaries have been selected for the first phase of the programme. They will be given 10 kg of rice, pulses, coconut oil, sugar, salt and tea every month. The Corporation will spend Rs.900 every month on each beneficiary of Ashraya.

Families or persons who cannot cook will be supplied cooked food through Ayalkkoottam neighbourhood groups.

At a function held at Gandhi Park on Thursday evening, Transport Minister Jose Thettayil inaugurated the distribution of food grains under Ashraya.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu presided over the function.

MLAs V. Sivankutty and V. Surendran Pillai, Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash, standing committee chairmen, councillors, UDF council party leader Johnson Joseph, Corporation secretary K. Biju and project officer V. Sailendra Prasad were present at the function.
