Alan Daniel Santhosh and Issac Georgy of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya emerged winners in the Thiruvananthapuram regional round of The Hindu-Young World Quiz ’13, considered the biggest quizzing event at the school level, held at Arafa Auditorium, Vallakkadavu, here on Tuesday.
The duo will participate in the finals slated to be held at the end of November or early December.
The regional round, which had all the ingredients of an edge-of-the seat contest, saw the Sarvodaya team go past their nearest rivals, Akhilesh D.S. and Ramees P.S. of Christ Nagar Senior Secondary School, Thiruvallam, by one point. The Sarvodaya team scored 69. The third position went to Loyala School, the defending champions, who scored 30 points.
The other three teams that qualified for the final round are St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Trivandrum International School, and Arya Central School. The six teams were selected through a written test, in which around 200 teams from 60 schools took part.
Bishop Pereira Memorial School was adjudged the best cheering team. The audience too went home with goodies for prompt answers.
L. Radhakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Home Department, gave away the prizes.
The winners of the regional round were given a cash prize of Rs.10,000, cycles, certificates, trophies, and gifts from various sponsors.
The first runners-up were given a cash prize of Rs.5,000 and the second runners-up Rs.3,000, as well as trophies, certificates, and gifts. Those placed fourth, fifth, and sixth received a cash prize of Rs.2,000 each and certificates.
Congratulating the winners, Mr. Radhakrishnan said at a time when the tendency among the younger generation was to rely more on digital equipment for storing information, the young participants took the natural way of stockpiling information in the brain. “It’s a good sign and should be encouraged,” he said.
The quiz master for the event was V.V. Ramanan.
D. Ravichandran, Deputy General Manager, Events, The Hindu, was present.
The presenting sponsor of the event is Britannia Milk Bikis Future Minds and the gift partners are Success Note Books, Reynolds, Kerala State Cashew Workers’ Apex Industrial Cooperative Society Ltd. (CAPEX), Babas studio, and Styleplus. IAds & Events are the event managers.
