The city Corporation has decided to form a committee to coordinate the decentralised waste managements efforts undertaken in the city.

The proposed body, christened the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Sanitation Management Committee, will have the Mayor as chairman and the health standing committee chairman as vice-chairman.

The Mayor can nominate an expert in the field as director of the committee.

Besides a general body, the committee will also include technical experts and workers’ representatives.

Funds

The Corporation intends to mobilise funds for the purpose through services undertaken through the committee, sale of products generated by waste management, assistance received from the government and non-governmental organisations, allocations set aside by the Corporation from its own fund, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds, donations and loans sanctioned by banks, cooperative institutions, other financial institutions and firms.

The by-law for constituting the body was proposed by health standing committee chairman K. Sreekumar and was subsequently approved by the council. Mayor V.K. Prasanth said the recommendations submitted by the councillors would be amended at a later stage.
