Gandhi Jayanti was observed in the city on Monday with numerous programmes organised by government offices and other organisations.

A special sanitation drive was organised on the premises of the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital. The efforts were jointly coordinated by the housekeeping wing, Nursing Superintendent office, and Peed cell. Hospital Superintendent M.S. Sharmad inaugurated the drive.

According to hospital officials, various other programmes have been lined up as part of the week-long observance. They included awareness classes, Gandhi Smrithi exhibitions, anti-liquor programmes, and collection of data pertaining to the saplings that had been planted on the World Environment Day.

The Kerala Police undertook sanitation efforts at all police stations, Armed Reserve Camps and the Police headquarters. Besides, the police have joined hands with other departments, local self-government departments and other establishments to clean-up their respective areas.

Awareness rallies led by the Student Police Cadets and Janamaithri groups were also conducted in various areas.

Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the State-level observance organised by the Kerala Police at a function held at Tagore theatre. Around 350 SPC cadets took part in the programme, according to an official release.

State Police Chief Loknath Behera led the clean-up drive at the Police headquarters. Headquarters ADGP S. Ananthakrishnan, IG I.G. Dinendra Kashyap and other senior officials were present on the occasion.

In another function, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president M.M. Hassan led the Gandhi Jayanti observance at the KPCC office.

Floral tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion.
