It will implement ‘school' system during the jubilee year, says Vice Chancellor
An international convention centre, an indoor sports complex, a solar energy scheme for the Karyavattom campus, and an institute for defence and strategic studies will be part of a Rs.1,000-crore infrastructure development and academic package that the University of Kerala plans to implement as part of its platinum jubilee in 2012.
Vice Chancellor A. Jayakrishnan told mediapersons here on Monday that the varsity would implement the ‘school' system during the jubilee year.
In addition to rebuilding hostels on the Karyavattom campus, a 100-bed hostel would be built for foreign students. Two multi-storey buildings would be set up to house the various schools of the university.
A front office complex would be built on the Senate House campus for students. A special facility would be set up for running valuation camps.
A modern canteen and facilitation centre for women employees and a dining hall would be constructed at Palayam.
A 10-storey, two-bedroom apartment complex would be constructed at Karyavattom for university employees.
A heritage centre too would be set up on the city campus.
In addition to an open-air auditorium, there would be a rain-harvesting system, a central instrumentation facility, and a biogas plant at Karyavattom.
Seventy-five books would be published as part of the jubilee programmes. Seminars, workshops, and a science exhibition were also being planned, Dr. Jayakrishnan said.
The Vice Chancellor released the logo of the platinum jubilee programmes. Designed by K.M. Fayaz, an alumnus of the university, the logo shows a scholar leaping forward with a degree in one hand.
“One of the roles of a university is social emancipation. I have captured that spirit in the logo,” Mr. Fayaz told The Hindu. The logo was selected by the university from among the 20-odd entries received by it.
An organising committee, with Governor M.O.H. Farooq, head of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma, and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as the main patrons, had been formed.
