As many as 1,000 saplings will be planted in public spaces and houses in the Kazhakuttom area under an initiative of the Rotary Club of Kazhakuttom.

The greening drive is being organised to mark the 1,000th weekly meeting of the club on November 20. As part of the celebration, Forest Minister Benoy Viswom and District Governor of the club Scaria Jose Kattoor will inaugurate community service projects .

Addressing reporters here on Thursday, T.V. Saravanakumar, secretary, said the club had decided to plant the 1,000 saplings distributed by the Forest Minister in schools and houses and by the roadside. He added that the saplings would be continuously monitored to ensure their growth.

A district-wide project named ‘Enable the Disabled' has also been initiated by the club to help the physically challenged. Some of the other community service projects involve renovating the toilets at the Karunya Kattela Centre for physically challenged persons and donating mattresses to the students of Bala Bhavan and Balika Bhavan of Holy Trinity School.

“The Club will also set up public comfort stations, old-age homes and a blood bank in Kazhakuttom,” said Rajendran R., treasurer. President of the club Roynold J. Gomez was also present.
