Road settles in heavy rain

Not a construction deficiency, claims TRDCL

A portion of the road between the Overbridge and Thampanoor settled during the heavy rain that lashed the city on Thursday.

In a statement, Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd. (TRDCL), the concessionaire of the Thiruvananthapuram City Road Improvement Project, said the damage was caused by the budging of the road directly above the sewage line close to the median. The sewage and pipeline were laid by the respective utility providers prior to handing over the site to the TRDCL for construction.

Since the restoration of the road had already been undertaken before handing over the site, the TRDCL had only provided the profile correction course as per the scope of work, the concessionaire said.

Pointing out that the defect was not any construction deficiency, the TRDCL added that it was in the process of initiating action to rectify the portion of the road in consultation with the Kerala Road Fund Board on an emergency basis.

The traffic police have adopted steps to prevent motorists from venturing into the damaged portion of the road.
