Road accidents snuff out two more lives, injure one

A 28-year-old man, identified as Sudhir of Killi near Kattakada, was killed after he was run over by a tipper lorry that struck his scooter down near Kaimanam Junction here on Monday.

According to the City Traffic Police, Sudhir, who used to run a business of selling home appliances on instalments, was turning from the National Highway towards Thiruvallam around 9.10 a.m. when the lorry struck his scooter and ran over him. A police vehicle rushed him to the Government Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead around 10 a.m.

The body was handed over to relatives after autopsy, while the police have taken the tipper lorry into custody and registered a case. Sudhir is survived by his wife Ansiya, a two-year-old child, his parents and a brother.

In another incident, a 20-year-old youngster sustained serious injuries when a lorry ran over his arms after hitting the two-wheeler on which he was travelling at Karakkamandapam on Monday.

According to the City Traffic Police, Adarsh of Venjaramoodu, a BBA student, was entering the National Highway from a side road coming in from Melamcode around 9.30 a.m., when the lorry, a national permit vehicle with Andhra Pradesh registration, came in from the Pappanamcode side and struck him down before running over both his hands.

Adarsh was rushed to a private hospital where he is in a critical condition. The traffic police have registered a case and are investigating.

In a separate accident, Jalajakumaran Nair, 53, of Kallayam, died after the motorbike he was riding collided with another two-wheeler near the Surya Prabha auditorium at Mannanthala late on Sunday. The City Traffic Police said Nair, who used to take up painting jobs on contract, was on his way to Vattappara from Mannanthala, with his friend Ashokan riding pillion, around 8.15 p.m. when his motorbike collided with a two-wheeler that was coming from the opposite direction. Nair sustained fatal head injuries during the fall, and was declared brought dead at the MCH.

The body was handed over to relatives after autopsy on Monday. A case has been registered and the traffic police are investigating.
