The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee on Tuesday went all out to rekindle patriotic fervour in the youth by organising a function to commemorate the Jalianwala Bagh massacre.
Addressing a martyrs' day function held as part of the All-India Congress Committee's 125{+t}{+h} anniversary celebrations, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said the Jalianwala Bagh massacre on April 13, 1919, continued to evoke patriotic sentiments among the people.
He said that the Congress had decided to commemorate historic events in order to make the younger generation aware about the sacrifices the founding fathers had to make for the country's Independence.
Gandhian P. Gopinathan Nair, who delivered the keynote address, said “we should learn our lessons from history. The British had to bow their heads to the force of the freedom fighters, but they injected the gene of communal animosity before they left the Indian shores.
As a result, Hindu-Muslim conflicts can be still witnessed in several parts of the country today.”
The former KPCC president C.V. Padmarajan also addressed the gathering. Congress deputy leader in the Assembly G. Karthikeyan, KPCC spokesperson M.M. Hassan, K.C. Rajan, K Mohan Kumar, DCC president V.S. Sivakumar and others participated in the function.
Earlier, the KPCC president paid floral tributes to the victims of the Jalianwala Bagh massacre at the Martyr's Column in the capital.
