The much-delayed profile correction and relaying of the ‘most distressed, settled and bad stretches’ of the corridors developed under the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP) will begin next week.
The Kerala Highway Research Institute has given the nod for the ‘mix’ to be used for the work by Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd. (TRDCL), the concessionaire of CRIP, after laboratory tests at Karyavattom.
The preliminary work will be taken up by the TRDCL this week after submitting the work schedule to the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB).
Work on 5,500 cu m will be taken up on the six-lane Kowdiar-RR Lamp and Asan Square-Airport stretches and settlements in a 900-m stretch on Poonthi Road.
Bump integrator tests have been carried out to find out the wear and tear. The 2.4-km road corridor from Kowdiar Square to RR Lamp, developed in 2006, has suffered the maximum wear and tear. The second corridor to get the profile correction and relaying is the 9.2-km stretch from Asan Square to the airport.
Settlements
The settlement on the 900-metre stretch on Poonthi Road is owing to the illegal parking of water tankers with a tonnage of 17 tonnes continuously in a spot. The stretch will be scarified before relaying.
The work is being taken up as part of a 15-year maintenance contract, and the government need not fund it. But, the TRDCL has decided to charge the government for the work where it directly did the restoration and settlements have occurred. As per current estimates, the work will incur an expenditure of Rs.7.5 crore to the TRDCL.
The TRDCL has decided to take up work on another 5,500 cu m on corridors developed under phase II. This will cost another Rs.7.5 crore. Under this, the stretches dug up on account of pipe-bursts and for laying cables and are giving motorists a bumpy ride will be rectified.
The TRDCL will deploy a paver on the bad stretches to give a 2.5-cm semi-dense bituminous concrete layer.
A KRFB official said the TRDCL had been asked to complete the work in a month.
