Chief Minister Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for installing a statue of the former Chief Minister R. Sankar here on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister said that by installing the statue, the government was only paying its respects to the former Chief Minister who had dedicated his life to the uplift of the weaker sections of society. Although there are R. Sankar’s statues in other places, there was none in the State capital which was the main venue of his activities.

The government had decided to permit installation of the statue close to the Legislature Complex to compensate for this shortcoming, he said.

Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar chaired the meeting. Meghalaya Governor M.M. Jacob, Excise Minister K. Babu, Mayor K. Chandrika, R. Sankar Foundation president T. Saratchandra Prasad, former KPCC president C.V. Padmarajan, CPI legislature party leader C. Divakaran, and Swami Sookshmananda were present.
