The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has opened the Putharikandam Maidanam for parking of vehicles. The permanent facility will accommodate around 120 cars and 500 two-wheelers, Works standing committee chairman V.S. Padmakumar has said. The facility will help ease traffic congestion on the Overbridge-East Fort stretch.

“Works on the gate, lighting, and gravelling are still pending. But we do not want to wait as the festival season is already here. Full-fledged operation of the one-and-a-half acres of land as a parking zone will commence after Onam,” he added.

The rates

Mayor K. Chandrika will officially inaugurate the parking area at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The parking rates are Rs.3 for two-wheelers, Rs.5 for autorickshaws, Rs.8 for small cars, and Rs.10 for large ones.

Putharikandam and Thampanoor are the only parking options available for the Corporation. Mr. Padmakumar said Corporation authorities would meet with officials of the Public Works Department and the Kerala Road Fund Board to consider other options.
