The project report for the proposed new Medical College in the capital, integrating the General Hospital and the Women and Children hospital at Thycaud, should be ready in three weeks’ time, the Health Minister, V. S. Sivakumar, has said.
The task of preparing a detailed project report on the same has been entrusted to P.G.R Pillai, the Special Officer in charge of the new Medical College projects of the government, Mr. Sivakumar said, addressing a press meet here on Friday.
The government expected to lay the foundation stone for the project by May-June this year. The GH campus has ample land – the minimum requirement was 20 acres -- for constructing new buildings, he pointed out.
Mr. Sivakumar also outlined the various basic infrastructure projects for the capital city on the anvil, for which budgetary allocations had already been announced.
A sum of Rs. 10 crore had been set aside for the proposed Attukal township. A sum of Rs. 17 crore hs been set aside for the first phase of the four-lane road project from Karamana to Kaliyikkavila. The Revenue-PWD departments had been allotted Rs. 47 lakh for the works. Adequate funds would be made available for land acquisition from the Rs 400 crore infrastructural fund in the budget.
The second phase of the capital city road development was in the planning process and envisaged 65 km of new link-radial roads, which will connect the capital to the suburbs. The government was in the process of appointing a consultant for the projects.
A net manufacturing company, with an annual production capacity of 500 metric tonnes of net, will come up at Muttathara. This is a Rs. 30 crore-project, which was expected to provide direct employment to some 150 persons and indirectly to 200 persons.
An urban environment improvement project at Rs. 10 crore to clean Parvathi Puthanar river. An allocation of Rs. 9 crore had been earmarked for the renovation of Tagore theatre.
