Kerala Government would ask the Centre to probe the financial sources of some human rights organisations in the state and to verify whether the funds were being used for any subversive activities, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said in the Assembly today.
He said some private human rights organisations operated in the state with ‘vested interests’ and these were under the observation of police and intelligence.
Some of these organisations had the support of religious bodies and also receive funds from foreign countries, he said replying to a calling attention to the necessity to inquire into ‘subversive activities’ and financial sources of the so-called rights organisations functioning in the state.
To inquire about the foreign funding of these outfits, the state had limitations.Hence, Chief Minister V S Achhuthanandan would write to the Centre to probe the financial sources of these outfits in the state and also whether such funds were being used for any subversive activities, he said.
Making it clear that Kerala would not be made a land of subversive activities, Balakrishnan said the government would take all necessary steps to deal with the menace.
Referring to the recent recovery of bombs from a place of worship in Kannur, Balakrishnan said places of worship would not be allowed to be converted into ‘armoury’
Taking up the issue, P Viswam (CPI-M) alleged outfits such as ‘Solidarity’ under the cover of human rights and stir for land rights were actualy engaged in unlawful activities.
