The district administration here has decided to take preventive measures to control the outbreak of monsoon-related cholera and other diseases reported from different parts of the district.
A meeting of the officials of the Departments of Health, Water Resources and the Municipality called by District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar here on Monday decided to take urgent steps to control the outbreak of cholera and other water-borne diseases reported from different parts of the district in the last one month.
Health Department had confirmed two cases of Cholera in the District on Friday.
So far, in the month of July alone, 17,331 cases of fever have been reported in the district. However, H1N1 cases were reported from the Kallekkad K.A.P Camp only.
The meeting decided to close down all `Thattukadas' (wayside eatery) functioning near drainages. There will be regular inspection of food sold in hotels, roadside shops and cool bars, the Collector said.
District Medical Officer (DMO) K. Venugopal said adequate quantity of medicines for fever had been stocked in government hospitals.
The District Collector has directed the Labour Department to ensure that construction workers are provided basic minimum facilities at their workplace.
The meeting sanctioned an amount of Rs.1.8 lakh to Palakkad Municipality for total sanitation programmes in the slum areas of the town.
Community toilets will be constructed by the municipality under the Total Sanitation Scheme, the Collector said.
He said the Water Resources Department would start work to shift drinking water pipeline passing through the drainage canals immediately.

Jayasree of the Health Department; K.P. Reetha, deputy superintendent, District Hospital; N. Rajan, municipal health supervisor, among others.
