Officials at the Fire and Rescue Services Central station here alleged that policemen at the A.R. Camp here played a prank on them on Friday, by making an emergency call and later asking them to use the fire engine’s ladder to help them tie a swing for the camp’s Onam celebrations.
However, City Police Commissioner P. Vijayan said the whole episode appeared to be blown out of proportion. Since the call was not a hoax, there would not be any action against anyone, he said.
According to officials at the Fire and Rescue Central station, personnel from the A.R. Camp had called them on Friday evening, asking them to send a ladder to tie a swing. The request was turned down by them. On Saturday, the station received an emergency call around 8.30 a.m. from the Police Control Room, saying that a man had climbed atop a tree in the camp and was threatening to jump. A quick response vehicle of the fire and rescue services was immediately despatched to the spot. However, the personnel said they found no such suicide attempt there and when the policemen of the camp were asked about the call, they said the man had climbed down and since the fire engine was already there, why not use it to help them tie the swing.
The personnel declined the demand and lodged complaints with their higher-ups as well as with the City Police Commissioner.
