Rama Devi is no different from the many neo-literates who have joined the equivalency programme of the Kerala State Literacy Mission, which offers an alternative education programme equivalent to formal education.
For many, it is a way to a better career. But Ms. Rama Devi nurses no such dream as she is already enjoying her retirement life. A former employee of the Government Press, she decided to join the programme because she “loves to learn.”
“I want to learn as much as I can,” says Ms. Devi, a dream she has carried with her all these years but remained unfulfilled as she was burdened with many responsibilities.
Now a student under the Literacy Mission programme, doing her 10th standard equivalency programme, she is back to her schooldays, every minute of which she finds enjoyable.
Excitement
And on Sunday, she looked excited as the others who had gathered for the district-level cultural festival organised by the Literacy Mission at Central High School, Attakulangara.
“I was not aware that such an equivalency examination existed. Even when many of my colleagues attended these classes, they did not inform me about it. Nevertheless, I decided that if such an option was available, I would take up studies after my retirement,” she said.
Holding a crumbled piece of paper in her hand, Ms. Rama Devi was all prepared to walk up the stage along with the team members for the group song competition. A senior on the team, as everyone looked up to her for support and encouragement, she held a thumbs-up signal and led the team.
