The city police are yet to arrest Karate Suresh, a gang leader, wanted chiefly on the charge of plotting the murder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist Renjith at Mannanthala in October last.

Official sources said that Suresh was sighted several times in the city this month, mainly in the vicinity of a party office at Vanchiyoor.

Suresh is also an accused in two major gangland killings in the city, including that of his underworld rival “Aprani” Krishnakumar. Their feud was mainly over the sharing of profits from the lucrative wetland reclamation business in the district. Gang leader Om Prakash is also an accused in the case.

The police said there is a warrant pending against Suresh under the provisions of the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAPA).

Officials said that Suresh is known to have strong bases at Mysore in Karnataka and at Kazhakuttom. They said after Renjith’s murder, a city-based lawyer had harboured Suresh along with other accused in the case in a government guest house in Malappuram and later at hotels in Munnar and Adimali. The police have so far not named the lawyer as an accused in the case. They said they had questioned him in 2007 in connection with Krishnakumar’s murder.

Last year, the police had arrested some low-ranking leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on the charge of conspiring the RSS man’s murder.

They are Vanchiyoor Hariprasad, Ajith alias ‘Motta’ Aji, ‘Chukkran’ Renjith and Velli Narayanan. Hariprasad is currently in preventive detention under KAPA. This year, they arrested gang leader Ambalamukku Krishnakumar in the same case.

The police case is that the accused killed Renjith in retaliation for the murder of CPI (M) activist ‘Vanchiyoor’ Vishnu in April last year. The conspirators were Vishnu’s close friends and also his partners in the lucrative business of selling earth from razed hillocks to realtors reclaiming wetlands for construction. They also had interests in the thriving real estate business in the district.

The police said the accused had a personal score to settle with Vishnu’s killers, allegedly a group of RSS men from Mannanthala.

Some of the RSS men had business interests comparable to that of their political opponents in Vanchiyoor. The opposing groups were in conflict with each other, though not always for political reasons, for quite some time.
