A bitumen mixture containing shredded plastic will be used by the Public Works Department (PWD) on Saturday for laying S.S. Kovil Road, extending from the Housing Board junction to the RMS junction, in the city.
The plastic-bitumen mix is being used as part of a plan chalked out to re-lay 50 km of PWD roads in the capital district using non-biodegradable plastic. The project is being taken up with the help of the Clean Kerala Company set up under the Urban Affairs Department.
Shredded plastic from shredding units will be used for re-laying the road. Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju said the re-laying of 50 km of roads using the plastic-bitumen mix would be completed this financial year. .
The Clean Kerala Company will procure the plastic from the shredding units, he said. Shredded plastic would be collected from private agencies if the units under the local bodies could not provide the quantity required, he said.
S.S. Kovil road will be closed from 8.30 a.m. for relaying the stretch.
