The piling work for the 510-m long, 12-m wide flyover at Mele Pazhavangady across the arterial road to link the Power House road with the Thakaraparambu road has commenced.

The work on the first of the 83 piles has commenced, near the second entry of Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station on the Power House road. Trial pits were dug by the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd. (TRDCL) — the concessionaire of the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP), — as a prelude to commencing piling for the flyover and to find out whether there are any utility cables on the stretch. Work is in full swing as the target is to complete the Mele pazhavangady flyover, the second one as part of CRIP that had entered the final phase, within two years, a TRDCL official told The Hindu . The soil test results had revealed the presence of rock below 20 ft, and a 1-m “socketing” in the rock would be carried out.

The flyover at Mele Pazhavangady is the second to be taken up under the CRIP and is almost of the same length as the one at Bakery Junction. Project officials said the target would be achieved provided there was no further hitch. As in the Bakery Junction flyover, there will be full-length grade separators at Mele Pazhavangady. There will be 13 piers and the authorities can consider the construction of a foot overbridge to link the railway station to East Fort, the TRDCL official said. It will be a three-lane bidirectional road. The ramp for the flyover will commence from near the second entry of the Central station on the Power House road, and near the RKV bus depot on the Thakaraparambu road on the other end. Simultaneous work would be taken up so that the work up to Parthas was completed by February 2013, the official said.

The sequence of work to be adopted for Mele Pazhavangadi flyover will be different from that adopted for the Bakery flyover. The public will be able to see the flyover coming up from one side to another. “The change in the sequence of work is to ensure that it is completed as per schedule,” Associate Vice-President, TRDCL, AnilKumar Panala said.

Traders' rehabilitation

The road from Pazhavangady to Power House via Central Theatre has been closed and barricaded for constructing temporary sheds for rehabilitating the traders who will have to be displaced for the project. The Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) has already announced a scheme to construct a bus stand-cum-shopping-complex in the compound of the Government Central School, Attakulangara. The 56 traders who will be displaced for the project also will be rehabilitated here.

The Thakaraparambu flyover will be part of the first Intermediate Ring Road which passes through Vellayambalam Junction, Thycaud, Choorakattupalayam, Power House Road, Thakaraparambu Road, Vazhapalli, Pettah, Nalumukku, Kannammoola, Law College Junction, PMG Junction, LMS Junction, and Museum Junction. The flyovers and underpass at Palayam are the major components of the CRIP, which is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted flow of traffic along the busy RR Lamp-Attakulangara corridor.
