The Kerala Human Rights Commission has ordered the authorities of Government Hospital, Kollam, to pay a compensation of Rs.4 lakh in connection with the death of a human rights activist while he was undergoing treatment at the hospital in 2005.

T.V. Yeshudas died of injuries sustained when he was beaten by a hospital security guard.

The victim was mistaken for a thief by the security guard, Sudharshan Pillai. The district court had earlier acquitted Mr. Pillai of all charges.

The police had said in its report that Yeshudas died of internal injuries from the beatings.

The commission said the hospital was responsible for the safety of the patients and the authorities should ensure that such events were not repeated.
