Parking regulations, such as the one prohibiting parking along the busy M.G. Road, is impractical and only serves to inconvenience the public, V. Sivankutty, MLA, has said. Lack of parking spaces is a major issue in the city, particularly at Sreekariyam, Medical College, M.G. Road, Chala, Palayam, Thampanoor, Karamana. and Pappanamcode, he said in a press note issued here on Friday. Haphazard parking was also a problem since it disrupted vehicular and pedestrian movement. Mr. Sivankutty claimed that the Kerala Road Fund Board, which was responsible for the construction and maintenance of 42 kilometres of city roads for 15 years, must construct parking facilities in the next phase of work.
He said land acquisition for parking required huge funds, which the city Corporation did not have at its disposal.
He said the Traffic Advisory Committee seemed to be bereft of ideas to deal with traffic congestion. The authorities must find vacant tracts of land in congested areas and acquire them for parking. Mr. Sivankutty also said that there must be stricter monitoring of heavy vehicles. They must not be allowed to move along city routes at least during rush hours.
