Multi-level parking complexes have been proposed near the proposed monorail stations to persuade people to depend more on public transport.
Monorail, an elevated rail-based mass rapid transit system (MRTS), is expected to reduce dependence on personalised modes of transport and take 40 per cent of the traffic off the city roads. A feasibility study carried out by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) had suggested multi-level parking complexes along the 41.8-km Pallippuram-Ulloor-
Overbridge-Killippalam-Neyattinkara corridor.
Sites identified
The sites identified for the multi-level parking complexes are vacant plots near the Technocity- Extension; Technocity; Pallippuram depot; behind marble shops near the Kaniyapuram bus stand; behind Kazhakuttam Mahadeva Temple; Kariyavattom University campus; Old NH Road near Gurumandiram; and Government Health Centre near Pangappara.
Old Family Court near Pongummoodu; City Corporation's parking area near the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College; Old NH Road near Ulloor Bridge; vacant land near the Kerala State Planning Board office at Pattom; near CSI Church, Palayam; behind TRIDA's Saphalyam Shopping Complex; a compound adjacent to the Srikumar theatre at Thampanoor; the Corporation parking area opposite to the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station; Government HSS premises, Chalai; Government Women's Polytechnic, Kaimanam; near the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation depot, Pappanamcode; vacant plot near Karakkamandapam; near Government HS, Nemom; near Pallichal; near Vedivechamkovil; near Mudavoorpara; and Vazhimukku; near Kerala Automobiles Ltd, Arallummoodu; vacant plots near Moonnukallumoodu; near TB Junction; and near Neyyattinkara station are the other spots identified.
The lack of adequate parking spaces has been a problem faced by the city with the phenomenal increase in the number of vehicles.
The availability of park and ride facilities with convenient inter-change facilities would encourage people to depend more on public modes of transport, the Natpac report noted.
Graded parking fee
The study has recommended a graded parking fee that recovers the economic cost of the land used for the facility. The complexes should come up in the public-private partnership mode to limit the impact on exchequer.
All such complexes should be encouraged to go in for electronic metering for better realisation of parking fees.
The 22.2-km first phase of the monorail will be from Pallippuram to Thampanoor and the second phase of 19.6 km from Thampanoor will terminate at Neyyattinkara.
