A high-level committee headed by Law Minister M. Vijayakumar and District Collector Sanjay Kaul has been formed to review and monitor the progress of road development works in the capital.
The decision to form the committee comprising V. Sivankutty and V .Surendran Pillai, MLAs; Mayor C. Jayan Babu; Trida chairman Ajayakumar; and heads of various departments was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Wednesday.
Mr. Vijayakumar told reporters that the committee would meet on Wednesdays to review the progress of the works. The next meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on June 9. The meeting decided to temporarily rehabilitate 54 traders at Thakaraparambu for constructing a flyover. He said necessary steps would be taken to solve the legal issues with the promoters of Big Bazaar. The flyover at Bakery Junction will be opened to traffic next month.
It has been decided to complete works such as shifting of utilities, clear water-logging and laying drinking water and drainage lines within a specified time schedule and coordinate the functioning of various departments to complete the ongoing projects of the KSUDP, JNNURM, JBIC and the Road Fund Board. Lack of coordination between various departments was one of the main impediment to completing the works on time. The high-level panel will ensure inter-departmental coordination, Mr. Vijayakumar said.
Almost 90 per cent of the work on laying underground power cables across 270 km has been completed by the Kerala State Electricity Board. Renovation of the Kesavadasapuram-Nalanchira road at an estimated cost of Rs.31 crore will begin on June 9. Tenders have been floated for Rs.21 crore and Rs.10 crore has been set apart for land acquisition. The meeting decided to complete majority of the works by December. It was decided to complete all works by March 31, 2011, Mr. Vijayakumar said.
