Panel chairperson proceeds on leave

District panchayat standing committee on welfare chairperson Sukhi Rajan has proceeded on a month’s leave ahead of a crucial meeting of the local body.

The meeting is expected to decide on whether to take up for discussion a notice for no-confidence motion moved by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) against district panchayat president Ansajitha Russel.

Ms. Rajan of the Congress had expressed displeasure over the style of function of Ms. Russel during the previous panchayat committee meeting.

Health reasons

At the said meeting, a ruling party member and a standing committee chairman had tendered his resignation. Ms. Rajan cited health reasons for going on leave.

In the letter, she sought permission to be away for a month from the proceedings of the panchayat. With this, the ruling party’s strength in the 26-member panchayat comes down to 13.

The Left Democratic Front has 12 members.

Sources in the panchayat say the no-confidence motion is likely to be taken up on March 10.

The rift in the ruling Congress party seems to be widening. On February 18, open dissent by ruling party members had triggered a war of words between the members of the Congress and the Left Democratic Front.

Works standing committee chairman Malayinkeezhu Venugopal submitted his resignation stating that Ms. Russel overruled his recommendations on allocation of work.

Subetha, the chairperson of another standing committee, had also stated that the president was giving scant regard to their suggestions.
