The Open Forum at the 16 International Film Festival of Kerala on Tuesday discussed on the topic ‘Promotion of Indian regional films.’
Film critic and director of Rotterndam Film Festival Rada Sesic, Mexican film critic Rusa Carillo, film critic and coordinator Uma de Cunha, film-makers Leena Manimekalai and Nirupama Sundar, Greek producer and critic James Mimicos and Kerala State Chalachitra Academy executive member Sasi Paravoor were the panellists at the Open Forum.
Ms Uma de Cunha said that Indian films are much in demand in the international film festival circuit. She, however, added that film-makers from India must be very selective while choosing film festivals to send their entries.
"Every film festival has its own character. A film-maker should be able to know where his film could be prominently showcased,’’ she said.
Ms Rada Sesic, said regional film institutions and academies play an important role in promoting regional films. ``Besides bridging the gap between the international and regional film scenes, regional film institutions also help in conserving the heritage called cinema,’’ she said. Ms Sesic said that film-makers have to be honest about their films and about themselves while sending entries to film festivals.
Mr Sasi Paravoor said that the Academy will soon launch a website exclusively for the promotion of new Malayalam films.
Leena Manimekalai, director of Tamil film `Sengadal’ said that film festivals help film-makers of off-beat films by providing a platform to showcase their film and meet people from around the world. ``In fact as of now film festivals are the only avenue where our kind of films can get an audience,’’ she said.
Asked about her comment on the Mullaperiyar issue Ms Manimekalai said that the people of Kerala and Tamil Nadu should not fall pray to politicians and chauvinism. "We must come up with solutions that ensures safety for Kerala and water for Tamil Nadu. This can be attained only through peaceful discussions. No community should feel that they are giving something and the other community is gaining something. That according to me is not at all healthy,’’ she said.
