A contract employee of the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) was arrested by the Museum police on Sunday for alleged diversion of funds that were meant for the mid-day meal scheme implemented in schools across the State.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Mohammed Mustafa of Tirur in Malappuram. The accused had been employed as a computer operator at the office of the Directorate at Jagathy.

“He has been accused of diverting around ₹28 lakh after forging receipts of funds utilised for various purposes. The funds were diverted to a personal bank account in a systematic manner,” an official said.

The alleged crime came to light when the accounts were thoroughly scrutinised by the Director of Public Instruction K.V. Mohankumar, on the basis of whose complaint Mohammed Mustafa, was taken into custody from his native place a day ago. He had also been dismissed from service earlier.

He has been remanded to judicial custody after being produced at a local court.
