One drowns, another missing near Kovalam

January 01, 2015 09:12 am | Updated 09:12 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

In a tragic accident as the year edged towards the end near the popular tourist spot of Kovalam on Wednesday, a 19-year-old girl – Sajini of Nedumangad – drowned, while her 21-year-old friend – Unni of Marappalam, near Pattom, in the city – was missing when reports last came in.

The Vizhinjam police said Unni and Sajini were reportedly seen by people sitting on a rock near a slightly isolated spot on the seaside at Azhimala, a few kilometres away from Kovalam.

Rough waves

The two were apparently oblivious to the fact that the particular rock was a thrashing point for waves and were swept away into the sea around 1.45 p.m., the police said.

While search and rescue efforts by the Coast Guard, the coastal police, and local people managed to trace the body of Sajini soon after the incident, attempts were on to trace Unni.
