Fast motorbikes catch every youngster’s fancy. But that fancy gets a little tricky when some resort to stealing fast bikes and try to make a living.
Two youngsters from the city found that life on this lane was dangerous when they were nabbed by the City Shadow Police last week. Aged 22 and 23, the two had made ‘quite a name’ for themselves as part of a gang engaged in stealing luxury bikes. Affixing these bikes with fake registration numbers, they went online to seek buyers. The clientele included chain-snatchers looking for faster escapes and illegal bike-racing enthusiasts.
The ‘spirit’ of racingIllegal motorbike races were once regular affairs in the city, with roads near Shangumugham and the Vellayambalam-Kowdiar area being venues. A couple of accidents and some strict policing saw the streets fall silent.
Now, the police suspect a quiet resurgence. A few youngsters, suspected to be part of the racing ‘fraternity,’ were arrested by the Valiyathura police. City Police Commissioner H. Venkatesh says racing will not be allowed.
Now, fem patrolSome good news for women. The city police will soon launch a special patrol scheme titled ‘fem patrol’ to tackle those who harass women in the city. A concept proposed by Deputy Commissioner S. Ajeetha Begum, the patrol will be supervised by the Inspector of the Vanitha Cell.
