For 136 children attending Maambazhakkaalam, a summer camp organised by Department of Culture, the next seven days will be fun-filled and informative.

It has in store a number of sessions which will cater to their academic and co-curricular needs. The participants of the residential camp, all students from classes 5 to 10, were selected from various districts based on the talents they showcased in arts, sports, dance and painting.

A typical day at the camp at the Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan starts with a yoga session at 8 a.m. and moves on to other segments that focus on science, art, sports and painting.

Inaugurating the camp, former Chief Secretary R. Ramachandran Nair stressed the need to think beyond competitions whereas Additional DGP B. Sandhya recited poems to which the children responded by clapping. A ‘naadanpaattu’ workshop by Anil Venjaramoodu and an origami workshop by Satheendran Panthalakkodu were lined up.

“The idea was to bring in elements of the past that evokes nostalgia about childhood,” says the co-ordinator Rajan V. Pozhiyoor.

It was the good feedback about the camp that encouraged Rajimol P. to enrol both her children. “Although we stay in the city, my children insisted on staying in the accommodation provided here,” she says.
