Governor P. Sathasivam on Thursday signed the final notification for upgrading Kannur municipality into a corporation and 30 grama panchayats into municipalities.

The number of municipalities will now go up from 60 to 90 and that of corporations to six.

On Wednesday, a draft notification was issued for forming Kondotty municipality by merging Kondotty and Nediyiruppu panchayats and upgrade Feroke panchayat into a municipality. The government has granted two weeks for hearing public views and opinions on the draft notification. On issuing the final notification, the number of municipalities will go up to 92.

The Cabinet had on April 16 cleared the formation of new panchayats and municipalities. As per the Constitution, formation of new corporations and municipalities should be announced by the Governor. Delimitation of wards in the new municipalities and corporation will begin soon. As per official estimates, each municipality should have minimum 25 and maximum 52 wards. Each ward will have a population of 20,000. In the case of corporations, the minimum number of wards has been fixed at 55 and maximum at 100. The population in each ward has been fixed at 10,000.

The new corporation and municipalities will come into existence on November 1, after the local body elections.
