The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will do everything possible to prevent the reopening of closed bars in the State.
Party State president Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, who presided over a State working committee meeting here on Thursday, said the situation did not warrant the renewal of licences of the bars remaining closed.
Party national secretary E.T. Mohammed Basheer said the order to close down certain bars was justifiable and logical. The party was of the view that the country should introduce prohibition in phases. Party leaders would take the lead in preventing any move to reopen bars. The closure of these bars should lead to a total ban on liquor in the State, Mr. Basheer said.
Shortage of fish The meeting discussed the problems faced by fish workers. The coastal regions of the State were in crisis due to the unprecedented scarcity of fish.
The government should introduce a special package for fish workers in view of the situation. Many households were already in penury, party State general secretary K.P.A. Majeed said. The working committee said the Supreme Court had overlooked the safety aspect and threat faced by the people of the State when it delivered the verdict in the Mullaperiyar case.
The party would continue with its environmental protection activities started last year.
The party would observe World Environmental Day on June 5 and hold a week-long programme, he said.
