NH widening: alternative source for soil identified

June 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:16 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which had faced difficulties in excavating earth from a facility at Akkulam, has been able to identify an alternative source for soil for widening the National Highway-66 bypass stretch from Kazhakuttam to Mukkola.

The excavation of earth from Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra’s land at Akkulam had snowballed into a controversy a few months ago with environmental activists and residents mounting a stiff agitation. The activity was then stayed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) following a petition filed by a group of activists, including poet Sugathakumari.
