Emergency Medicine Department to be set up at hospital

September 09, 2017 01:27 am | Updated 01:27 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

A meeting convened at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on Friday by the Additional Chief Secretary (Health) has set up a core team to study and report on the current system of emergency management at MCH, the deficiencies and gaps in the system so that all departments can function in a more coordinated manner to save lives.

The group will identify major emergencies under different heads — medical, cardiac, orthopaedic, surgery or trauma — and establish standard operating procedures for each category. The meeting had been convened in the backdrop of the new Emergency Medicine department being set up at MCH soon on the lines of the apex trauma care centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

The core group will also come up with a report or proposal on how the new Emergency Medicine department should function, the duty roster for different department faculty members to serve in the EM department, among others.

About 650 doctors and nurses have already undergone trauma protocols training and will have continuous refresher courses.
