Mayor V.K. Prasanth on Thursday unveiled a calendar for removal of non-biodegradable waste in the city through various facilities at regular intervals as part of the Corporation’s My City, Beautiful City project. The facilities include aerobic bin units, material recovery facilities, and resource recovery centres.

Besides collecting clean-and-dry plastic waste every day through aerobic-bin centres, old footwear and bags will be collected on the third Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in the months of January, April, July, and October.

Glass bottles, and broken glass will be collected on the second Saturday and Sunday in the months of February, May, August, and November.

Electronic waste will be removed on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in the months of June and December. Special counters will be set up for this.

Organic waste that decomposes slowly such as coconut shells, husk, firewood, and tree branches will be collected on the fourth Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each month through these counters.

In the first phase, the aerobic bins units are those at Jagathy, on the Killipalam bypass road, near the Corporation rest house at Ulloor, on the Ambalamukku Sree Krishnaswamy temple road, near Chitra Thirunal park at Fort, near Chakka bypass junction, near Thirumala Vijayamohini Mills, and behind the Corporation’s old-age home at Kalladimugham. The material recovery facilities are at Punnapuram, Sreekanteswaram; near the Palayam market; near the Peroorkada market; and on the Kuravankonam-Nanthancode road.

From the material recovery facilities, which is an interim facility, these will be transported to the resource recovery centres such as those at Muttathara.

The facilities will begin functioning on September 20. Staff will be deployed in two shifts here to prevent waste from being dumped here. If need be, staff will be posted round the clock, the Mayor said.

The Mayor also flagged off 25 goods autorickshaws for sanitation activities in the Corporation’s health circles. The vehicles will collect waste from roadsides and transport it to aerobic bins for conversion into manure. They will also transport the manure to those requiring it. The vehicles have been purchased as part of the People’s Plan project of the civic body.

The Corporation, he said, had asked the government for incinerators to dispose of diapers and sanitary napkins. The incinerators would be set up beside the aerobic bin units. Problems associated with the aerobic bins were a things of the past as waste brought there was checked and accepted only if there was no plastic mixed with it, he said. In areas where aerobic bins were non-functional, staff would be posted to streamline their functioning.
